Eco-Waste Collection
Mirman led the way once again, as we organized all the organizations along our stretch of the Mulholland corridor to join together in our Second Annual Eco-Waste Collection on February 21st. Mirman had the most volunteers and the most cars dropping off eco-waste to be safely and responsibly recycled. Together with folks from the westside and the valley, we filled a 40 foot truck! Switching over to digital tv in the months to come? Save the old stuff for us for next year's collection!

Parents of Alumni Reception 2008
There were hugs and laughter, happy memories and new stories to share as Mirman alumni parents joined current and emeriti faculty and administrators at the Fourth Annual Parents of Alumni Reception on April 12, 2008. Some of the participants were frequent visitors to campus, while others hadn't been back in a decade or two! Everyone enjoyed the good food, wine and mellow music as they visited with old friends and made some new ones. They were excited to view the latest campus improvements and progress on the Annenberg Center for Communication, which will open in September 2008. We look forward to seeing everyone again next year!

Eco-Waste Collection Event 2008
It was a cold gray day but nevertheless our Mulholland community filled a 40 foot truck with 20 pallets of eco-waste! Mirman was extraordinarily well represented, with student and parent volunteers and with participants dropping off e-waste. We can all be very proud of the fact that 55 of the 133 cars that drove through were Mirman families, faculty and staff, and friends! The Mirman School initiated this event; we were joined by the Bel Air Presbyterian Church, Berkeley Hall, Curtis School, Milken Community H.S./Stephen S. Wise Temple, and Westland School. We are proud of our leadership role, and hope this will become an annual event!

Annual Sacramento Trip Declares Eureka!
Eureka! Mirman Students had an amazing trip through Sacramento, led by the indefatigable team of Mrs. Balaban, Mrs. Corliss, Ms. Gonzales, and Ms. Ordonez.

On the first day, the students had the rare treat of going onto the Assembly Floor and meeting the Assembly Majority Leader Karen Bass, thanks to the arrangements made by Parent Mary Lee. Some lucky students even got to shake hands with Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger on his way through the Capitol. The children had a busy but educational time, viewing a variety of sites including the Native American Museum, Sutter's Fort, the Railroad Museum, panning for gold in Coloma, and taking a delightful stroll through Old Sacramento. They arrived home tired but filled with a greater understanding of our state's rich and varied history.

Colonial Day
Students enhanced their American History curriculum with Colonial Day. The half-day event included numerous colonial activities including, hand dipping wax candles, practicing calligraphy on parchment paper with genuine goose quills and ink, turning cream into butter, making cornhusk figures and dolls, sewing and quilting, learning how to card and weave thread from raw wool and other fibers and playing traditional games from that era, including hoops, nine pins, and marbles. The day ended with fresh cornbread spread with each student's homemade butter. One student summed it up by observing that "the colonists must have been very tired at the end of each day."

Walk Around the World
Faculty, administration, friends, and family enjoyed learning about a multitude of countries, as presented by students. Students, wearing a dazzling display of regional costumes, gave brief talks and displayed informational boards complete with fascinating photos and regalia. This year, the students were assigned a country, which they studied for the past month. The children learned a great deal about the history, geography and culture of their country. The visitors were all very impressed with the children's presentations and the pride they displayed while talking about their "adopted" nation. A large round of applause to Ms. Muler, Mrs. Shimotsu and assistant teachers Ms. Towns and Ms. Turtzer for their tireless supervision and encouragement during this ambitious project.

Annual Hat Parade
Before Spring Break, students created whimsical hats depicting books they had read in class. Each of them selected a favorite story and fashioned a hat which included characters or scenes from that story. The children proudly displayed their creations during the Hat Parade, which wound through the adjacent classrooms and administrative offices to an appreciative audience.
