Leonardo Matos, known to students and families as Coach Leo, is a Physical Education Specialist, soccer coach, program director, and founder of LA Evolution, a Los Angeles-based sports development program focused primarily on youth soccer. Originally from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Coach Leo has dedicated his career to education, athletics, and youth development. At Mirman School, he has led the soccer program for the past nine years, helping build a strong and competitive soccer culture. During that time, Mirman soccer teams have won more than ten championships and have been undefeated, and he has been recognized as Mirman School Coach of the Year three times. He has also served as a Physical Education Specialist for more than five years, working with students across physical education and athletics. Coach Leo’s soccer background began in Brazil, where he played and trained with organizations including CEFET/RJ in futsal, Clube de Regatas do Flamengo, and Botafogo Futebol e Regatas in beach soccer. He later stepped away from competitive playing to pursue higher education and graduated from Senac Rio University in 2014 with a degree in Environmental Science and Management.
While in college, he remained connected to soccer as both a player and trainer, eventually continuing his development as a coach. He holds a U.S. Soccer License and graduated as a Soccer Manager from Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) Academy Brazil. He has coached youth players through Paris Saint-Germain Academy in both Brazil and Los Angeles.
In 2017, Coach Leo founded LA Evolution, a Los Angeles-based youth sports program that provides training and development opportunities for athletes across multiple sports, with soccer as its primary focus. Through LA Evolution, he has helped young players pursue opportunities at the collegiate, academy, national-team, and professional levels. Players he has worked with have gone on to play college soccer, join academy programs, represent their countries at the national-team level, and sign professional contracts. Beyond coaching, Coach Leo is committed to using sports as a way to give back to the community. Through his nonprofit work with a 501(c)(3) organization LASE Community, he has helped provide opportunities and support to more than 100 children in the United States and Brazil. His community work reflects his belief that access to sports can have an impact far beyond the field, providing young people with mentorship, confidence, discipline, and a sense of belonging. For Coach Leo, soccer is more than simply teaching a player how to compete. He believes the game should allow young athletes to develop creativity, confidence, discipline, and a genuine love for the sport.
His coaching approach emphasizes patience and encouragement while challenging players to work hard, respect others, learn from mistakes, and take ownership of their development. He recognizes that every athlete develops at a different pace and strives to create an environment where students feel comfortable learning, experimenting, and growing. Coach Leo believes that successful coaching is not measured only by championships or individual achievements. It is also measured by the relationships built, the lessons learned, and the character developed along the way. He is certified as a Double-Goal Coach through Positive Coaching Alliance, an approach that emphasizes both athletic development and the life lessons that can come from participation in sports. Above all, Coach Leo’s goal is to help young people become better athletes while also helping them become confident, respectful, resilient, and supportive members of their communities.
